Basic Mixer Settler Extractor Operation Principles

The mixer and settler are essentially two separate components that are integrated to act as one system. In the simplest of arrangements, the mixer vessel contains an agitator that is in contact with the feed solution (heavy phase) and solvent (light phase) to thoroughly mix the phases (if more contact time is required, the feed rate is decreased, or multiple mixer-settlers/stages are employed). From there, a pumping turbine transfers the emulsion to the settler. The settler, which is located downstream from the mixer to allow the heavy phase and light phase liquids to separate by gravity. The settler may incorporate coalescer plates to aid in the separation of phases and break down of foam. Coalescers can be several different configurations (plate / formed plate/ structured packing). Additionally, the mixing and settling zones are separated by a weir, or barrier, to avoid back-mixing. Once the process is complete, the liquids can be removed separately.

Main Advantages of Mixer Settler Extractor

Corrosion Resistant

Mixer Settler Extractors are corrosion resistant because all product parts are exclusively manufactured in PTFE or Borosilicate glass.

Wide Applications

For different applications, a tempering jacket for heating or cooling is possible. Due to the special design, the amount of reference product is required.

High Efficiency

The agitator system with a turbine stirrer is used for dispersion with an adjustable gap to optimize the suction efficiency, also for larger mixer-settler systems.

Multifunctional Devices

The vertical settler in a laboratory scale of 0.5L-10L goes along with a small hold-up, especially for distillation and rectification tops with a small distillate mass flow. The vertical settler is provided with a phase level adjustment of the two liquid phases via a siphon. The inverse phase operation is possible by turning the apparatus.

What are the Main Parts of Mixer Settler Extractor?

Motor and Agitator

Each mixer and settler extractor is equipped with an independent adjustable speed motor and turbine agitator blade, which is convenient for disassembly and assembly. The forward and reverse rotation of the motor is reversible, and the speed range is 0~1500 rpm. Turbine agitator blade is usually made of PP/PVC/PMMA/metal and other materials.

Interface Regulator

The interface regulator adopts a unique spiral structure. By adjusting the height of the spiral adjusting rod, the heavy phase flow resistance is changed, so as to change the height of the two-phase interface and achieve effective adjustment of the two-phase interface.

Baffle and Coalescence Plates

The settling chamber is equipped with a baffle, which can not only guide the mixed liquid overflowing from the mixing chamber to the settling chamber, but also prevent the overflow liquid from disturbing the heavy-light phases clarification and stratification process of the settling chamber. At the same time, two coalescence plates are also set to break water in oil and oil in water droplets, which can effectively prevent the generation of emulsification.

Connection Mode of Extraction Tank Inlet and Outlet

PP ferrule joints are installed at the inlet and outlet of heavy and light phases. The threaded end of the ferrule joint is connected with the mixer settler extractor, and the other end is connected with a special transparent PVC hose.

Integrated Control System

In view of the actual needs of the extraction process, our company has independently developed an embedded integrated control system for extraction. Each set of integrated control system, equipped with a 10-inch touch screen, built-in microprocessor and control program, can achieve integrated batch control of motor speed and peristaltic pump flow of each extraction line.

Environmental Protection System

The environmental protection system includes aluminum profile frame, exhaust gas collection hood, axial flow fan, special aviation plug for motor, LED lighting, etc. The exhaust gas collection hood is processed and assembled with PMMA plates, PP plates and aluminum profiles. Sliding doors are provided on one side of the mixing chamber and the side of the settling chamber to facilitate sampling and operation. The mixer settler extractor is placed in the waste gas collection hood, and the waste gas generated can be collected and discharged through the fan. The motor is placed outside the exhaust gas collection hood to contact with clean air, which can effectively prevent corrosion to the motor. At the same time, the motor and the control cabinet are connected through the aviation plug, so it is convenient to disassemble or replace the motor. The top of the exhaust gas collection hood is equipped with an LED lamp, which can provide sufficient light for the observation of the extraction experiment phenomenon.

Equipment Design for Mixer Settler Extractor

For most processes, one mixer and one settler will not be enough to achieve effective separation. Often a system is designed with several mixer-settler stages in series. Although the flow of the two liquid phases can be countercurrent, concurrent, or cross flow, solvent use is most inefficient in crossflow. The transportation of the liquids from one stage to the next occurs either by gravity or using pumps.
